Munich - a special production procedure makes the iron production clearly more pollution free. The Clou: Instead of working as usual with coking coal, the Corex procedure needs only conventional hard coal. This steel plant does not need a coking plant, which contributes in the substantial measure to the emissions. As the research magazine Pictures OF reports the Future in its recent expenditure, the method of Siemens VAI reduces the output of sulfur dioxide by 97 per cent. Corex is a fusion reduction method: The coal gasification, which iron ore reduction and the liquefaction of the developing iron is in a process combined. The resulting gases can be used directly for heating or for the generation of current in a gas and a steam turbine power station.
Those boom-ends economics in China and the increasing urbanisation leads also to an upswing of the heavy industry. The densely populated areas belong in the meantime to the most strongly dirty regions of the world. New steel plants are usually established therefore with particularly environmentalcareful technology and far from the cities. The new plant of the Baosteel daughter Baoshan in Luojing is to produce annually 1.5 million tons of pig irons with the Corex procedure. It is blown on in the autumn 2007 . Baosteel already plans a further Corex plant for likewise 1.5 million tons of pig irons.
